The number that is more on the right of the number line is the bigger number and the number which is to the left on the number line is smaller. Let us now look at some examples.

Consider the diagram of the number line showing the position of -7 and -3 below:

Since -3 is four steps to the right of -7 we conclude that -7 is NOT GREATER than -3. In fact, -7 is less than -3.

Since -4 is to the right of -7 on the number line, we conclude that -4 is greater than -7.

Since -8 is to the left of -7 on the number line, we conclude that -7 is indeed greater than -8.

Since -6 is to the right of -7 on the number line, we conclude that -6 is greater than -7.

Since -5 is to the right of -7 on the number line, we conclude that -5 is greater than -7.

Since -2 is to the right of -7 on the number line, we conclude that -2 is greater than -7.

Since -9 is to the left of -7 on the number line, we conclude that -7 is indeed greater than -9.

Is -7 greater than -1

Since -1 is to the right of -7 on the number line, we conclude that -1 is greater than -7.
